2016-2017 year-in-review
What? So What?
What is something new that you learned this year? Why is that learning significant and how has this enhanced your ability to contribute academically or otherwise?
This year, I had the opportunity to learn more about my specific major, Medical Laboratory Science. I learned about the vast number of options I have following graduation, including going into research, working for the army, and traveling on contract jobs. This learning was significant because I can now focus my attention on working towards a specific job and specialty I believe I will like the most.
How have you used your gifts and talents to give back to the community and society?
I have been working for the Plas Lab for almost two years now. This past summer, I had the opportunity to work on a specific research paper with the lab manager. In doing so, I had the chance to use my talents to aid in the search for more in-depth answers about the causes and cures of breast cancer. While the specific research I took part in may never actually contribute to my community or society, I know that my talents were put to good use in the attempt to do so.
Now What?
What piece of advice would you like to give yourself as you prepare for the upcoming year, be that academically, personally, or both?
I would say to find what makes you happy, and make sure to do that. I know it can be hard sometimes because I’m a bit of a push over, and I kind of just do whatever people tell me to do, even if I don’t believe in it. So try to stick to your guns, learn to make decisions, and decide on things for you.
What is at least one goal that you have set for yourself for the upcoming year?
I probably have more than one. For example, I want to do well in school. And when I say “well”, I specifically mean maintaining a high GPA, graduating from college, and learning as much as I can in order to pass my certification testing. And as long as I am a diligent student, I know that these will all be achievable. So for a little more of a challenge: a goal to train my dog to play dead. And I promise you, if you knew my dog, you would know that’s a pretty lofty goal.
How will you use your gifts and talents to give back to the community and society?
I will continue to work with the Plas Lab in their efforts to find new cancer treatments, and to better understand how specific tumors function. I will also continue to volunteer with Bearcat Buddies to aid in tutoring students in Cincinnati public schools.
