"Listen to the Music" Seminar
Reflection:
In my “Listen to the Music” seminar, I had the opportunity
to learn about musical styles. The class started out by discussing general
musical terminology, such as rhythm, melody, form, texture, harmony, and
scoring. After we were able to grasp the amount of variety each of these
categories can contain, we used them to distinguish different time periods of
music. The first time period we evaluated was the Classical, followed by the
Romantic, Modern, and Middle Ages. In each section, we examined the typical
style of music, different composers, and several musical selections. Based off
our first unit over the categories of musical style, we practiced listening to the
selections to determine what made them fit in with certain time period.
For me, this seminar was important because I know very little about music. I wanted to expand my knowledge, and, in a sense, become more cultured. “Listen to the Music” did exactly that for me. I know have a greater appreciation for musical styles and time periods that I used to shy away from. Honestly, I am very sad the experience is over! I only wish that I could have learned so much more.
I am much more interested now in going to see operas, musicals, and concerts than I ever have been before. I intend to practice the information I have gathered from this seminar by continuing to listen to more musical styles and analyzing what makes these styles different. I really enjoy knowing a bit more about music; now I have more to talk about with the opera major I will be living with in the fall of 2015!

Artifact:
At the end of this seminar, I was required to submit a 2000 word essay over a music topic of my choosing. Because I am an Anthropology major with an interest in Latin America, I chose to write about the differences between Aztec and Medieval European music. As I researched my topic and wrote my paper, I got to apply several of the ideas and terminology I had learned from this seminar. It was a great way to apply the new information, as well as to connect it to a subject I am absolutely fascinated with in a way I never would have considered otherwise.
