"Teamwork and Leadership From Within" Seminar
Reflection:
This seminar started off with a class of about twenty
individuals and two teachers, but our little group had the incredible
opportunity to sit in on some of Greg Sizemore’s Wednesday night leadership
classes. Several speakers, such as President Ono, Walker Lee Evey, Coach
Tuberville, J.B. Bernstein, and Greg Sizemore himself, talked to the class
about their own experiences with leadership, teamwork, success, and failure. It
was an environment where everyone felt safe and everyone was encouraged to
express their insights and opinions. Outside of this classroom of one hundred
plus students, our small group from the original seminar also got to
participate in Junior Achievement and Adventure Outpost. The first consisted of
going to classrooms throughout the Cincinnati school district and teaching
about different economic subjects. Adventure Outpost was where our class of
twenty got to complete team building exercises throughout an entire day. During
the entire seminar, we were required to read and journal our thoughts over the 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership, while
also connecting these laws to our experiences in the classroom, with Junior
Achievement, and with Adventure Outpost.
When I first signed up for this class, I had absolutely zero belief in my abilities to be a leader. I had never before experienced a leadership position or class, and I thought I would benefit from taking an honors seminar over it. I was quite sure what to expect of this class, but I got above and beyond anything I could have ever dreamed of. Not only was I learning how to become an excellent leader and team member, but I was also learning about how to become a better version of myself. Everything discussed and done in this seminar was motivational, inspirational, and completely eye opening. Prior to this class, I had never experienced anything like it. I am eternally grateful for all it has given me.
Moving forward, I want to apply what I’ve taken away from this seminar to both my personal and professional life. I know I still have so much to work on. I am still filled with a lot of fear and uncertainty. I still have not experienced a leadership position. However, I am still different. I am attempting to face those fears and uncertainties, and I will begin my first leadership position in the fall of 2015. I appreciate people more, and I’ve worked at networking myself. My relatively non-existent inner circle is slowly starting to grow, and I plan on continuing to develop it. There is so much I have to do in order to become the leader, team member, and person I want to be, but this seminar was the perfect first step for me. It has already changed me so much, and I’m excited to see how it will continue doing so.

Artifact:
Throughout this seminar, we were required to read a book over the 21 laws of leadership. We were then asked to create 21 journal entries where we discussed our opinions of the law, connected to why or why not we were strong in making use of that law, how we connected the law to our in- and out-of-class experiences, and how we wanted to apply this law in the future. During the class, several people came and spoke to us about leadership, teamwork, and their own experiences with these things. Our small group also got to do the out-of-class experiences of team-building and teaching. Working to apply the 21 leadership laws to these different experiences in my journals helped me in analyzing the laws and evaluating how I can better apply them to my life.
